Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses laser light — an intense, pulsating beam of light — to remove unwanted hair. Laser hair removal works by passing a light beam through the skin. The laser targets dark pigment, called melanin, in hair. When the light beam hits the hair follicle (where hair growth originates), the intense heat destroys the hair follicle instantly.
In most cases, laser hair removal slows hair regrowth, but it takes several treatments to provide an extended “hair-free” period.
The First Visit
At Green and Urribarri, we will review your medical history and ask a few questions that are important to anyone considering laser hair removal. For example, we would like to know of any medical conditions you might have, and would like to learn about any medications you presently are taking, or recently have taken. We will explain the process with you and, of course, we will answer any questions you have, so please feel free to jot them down and bring them in with you.
Your skin and hair color dictate which laser we will use for your personal treatment. As laser experts, we can choose the one that is best suited for your individual needs.
A typical laser hair removal session lasts well under an hour. Facial hair is treated in about 10 minutes, while it takes about 45 minutes to laser both legs and 30 minutes to treat the entire back. Bikini areas usually take 10 to 15 minutes.
Q&A
How soon should I expect to see results?
Usually you will see results within 2-3 weeks after your first session. Many of our patients see a big difference after their first session
Will hair bumps and razor bumps be gone?
This is one of the great beneficial side effects of laser hair removal. Reduction of hair bumps and ingrown hairs will be markedly noticeable even after your first session. We have seen this on all body parts including face, neck, bikini line, legs, backs and underarms.
I am a person of color and have heard I should not have laser treatments because of the risk of burning or scarring of the skin. Is this true?
While this once was the case, we’re happy to report that it isn’t any longer!Using new laser technology, we have done thousands of sessions on people of color without complication. Uniquely designed lasers protect the skin while achieving excellent hair removal results. And, as we reduce the hair growth, we even can reduce the pigmentation changes (caused by ingrown hairs) that commonly arise in people of color.
The pigmentation on the skin that is caused by infrown hairs will be markedly reduced after laser hair removal.
Regarding pregnancy and nursing, can I still consider laser hair removal?
At Green and Urribarri, We prefer not to treat pregnant patients. Should you become pregnant during laser hair removal sessions, we simply finish your package after you deliver. We do, however, treat nursing women.
