Cryo Surgery / Leep

What is Cryosurgery?
Cryosurgery is done in our office by applying a probe in your cervix which applies a freezing gas to the abnormal cells on your cervix. The probe is applied to your cervix for several minutes until an ice ball is seen then the probe is removed.

Is this procedure painful?
Women may complain of abdominal cramping, so we advise that they take Advil or Tylenol 30 minutes prior to the procedure.

What can I expect after the cryosurgery?
The effect of the freezing process causes a watery vaginal discharge for about 3-4 weeks after the procedure.

Can I use tampons and also have sex after the procedure?
We recommend that you wait 4-5 days after the procedure to insert a tampon or have sexual relations.

What happens after that?

We recommend that you have a regular Pap smear test every 4-6 months after the cryosurgery for at least 1 year.

“LEEP”

What is the LEEP Procedure?
The LEEP surgery is usually for more severe or persistent changes of the cell on your cervix. This procedure is done with some anesthesia in a surgical suite or hospital setting.  The LEEP procedure cuts away a thin layer of the surface of the cells on your cervix with an electrical cautery. This specimen is sent to the Pathologist for examination.

What can I expect after the LEEP Procedure?
There will be some minimal vaginal bleeding and a dark yellowish discharge after the procedure. Some women experience cramping and take Advil and Tylenol.

Can I use tampons or have sex after this procedure?
We recommend that you do not have sex or use tampons for 7-10 days after this procedure.

What happens after that?
Your Provider will advise you of the Pathologists report, you may only need to repeat your Pap test every 4-6 months for 1 year
