What is endometrial biopsy?
An endometrial biopsy is a procedure done in the office to obtain cells from the inside of your uterus. Why do I need an EMB?
Usually, an EMB is performed as the result of an ultrasound or for abnormal vaginal bleeding. If the lining of your uterus seems abnormally thick or you are having unusually bleeding, then an EMB is performed. What can I expect for this procedure?
We recommend you take some Advil or Tylenol 30 minutes prior to the procedure to alleviate any cramps that you may feel. Your Practitioner will have you placed in a similar position for a Pap smear, introduce the speculum into your vagina, and then clean your vagina with betadine solution. Your cervix may be held with an instrument, and then a small plastic tube, like a straw, will be introduced inside your uterus. The plastic tube has a brush or suction tip to remove some cells from inside of your uterus, which are sent to the Pathologist for evaluation. When do I get the results?
It usually takes about 10 business days to receive the results from the Pathologist. You may call our lab if you do not hear from us within 2 weeks. What happens after I get the results? At Green and Urribarri we will contact you and discuss the results with you. There may, or may not be any further treatment.
