Her Option can help you take control of your heavy periods.
Although there are several treatment options for reducing or eliminating heavy periods, most require hormone therapy or surgery. Some are intended for hospital use and may cause significant discomfort when performed in a doctor’s office.
Her Option® was designed with your comfort in mind. It’s the only endometrial ablation therapy approved for office use. That means your doctor performs the therapy in the familiar setting of your regular clinic. The treatment requires minimal anesthesia—no IV or surgery. Many women even return to their normal activity level by the next day.
Benefits of Her Option Office Cryoablation Therapy
- high success and patient satisfaction rate
- patient comfort
- strong safety profile
- a procedure, not a surgery
- no hormones
- may require only a minimal office co-pay
Important safety information
Her Option is not recommended for everyone. You’ll need to be evaluated by your doctor to find out if it’s right for you.
You will not be a candidate if you:
- intend to become pregnant
- use an IUD
- suffer from uterine cancer
- have an active urinary tract infection or pelvic inflammatory disease
- have certain types of uterine abnormalities.
What is done
Cryoablation uses sub-zero temperatures to reduce or eliminate the uterine lining. The natural analgesic affect of these low temperatures reduces patient discomfort during the procedure. Plus, ultrasound guidance during the procedure lets your doctor monitor the therapy as it happens, offering an additional level of safety.
Cryoablation offers additional long-term benefits, including:
- minimal scarring (this feature may help your doctor identify future issues more quickly)
- improvement of pain and mood related to PMS
What happens after your treatment?
You should arrange for someone to drive you home from the procedure. You may also want to take it easy for the rest of the day. Most women can return to normal activities the next day.
Your doctor may ask you to hold off on sexual activity or use of tampons until after your first check-up. He or she will provide you with additional information on how to care for yourself after the treatment.
When will I see results?
Within the first three months following the treatment, you should experience a reduction in bleeding. It’s not unusual to experience two or three menstrual cycles before you see the treatment take effect, though some women see results immediately.
What will my bleeding be like?
The goal of Her Option Cryoablation Therapy is to reduce abnormal uterine bleeding to normal levels. Occasionally a woman may stop getting her period altogether after cryoablation therapy, or experience light spotting for a few days each month.
Will there be any side effects?
Immediately following the cryoablation treatment, some women feel cramping similar to a menstrual period. A mild medication like ibuprofen and a heating pad can help minimize your discomfort. You may also experience a watery discharge for up to three weeks following the treatment as the tissue heals. This is normal.
The treatment should not affect your desire for or enjoyment of sexual activity.
What additional improvements can I expect?
Many women who undergo Her Option treatment report a reduction in PMS symptoms like fatigue, irritability, and cramping.
Pregnancy and birth control
You should only use Her Option Cryoablation Therapy if you no longer plan to have children. However, it is possible to become pregnant following the therapy. Because the resulting pregnancy would be high risk for both the woman and the fetus, you should continue to use a reliable form of birth control after your treatment.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms after your treatment:
- vaginal bleeding heavier than your normal period
- fever above 100.4°F
- nausea or vomiting
